Morocco Awards ‘Game-Changer’ Hybrid Solar Project

Morocco has contracted an EdF-led consortium to build a hybrid PV-CSP solar plant, combining PV’s low cost with CSP’s after-dark operability.

The Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (Masen) has selected a consortium of France’s EdF, Abu Dhabi’s Masdar and local venture Green of Africa to develop the world’s first hybrid power plant of solar PV and concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies.

Masen estimates the cost of the development at MD7.57bn ($780mn). Spain’s TSK will design and build the plant, which will have a total installed capacity of 800MW and a minimum five hours of electricity storage to enable electricity supply to the grid after sunset.

The plant will be the first in the world to integrate PV and CSP technologies in a single hybrid installation: Dubai’s MBR Solar Park will include both PV and CSP capacity but in separate development phases that are not internally linked ( MEES, 8 March ). (CONTINUED - 751 WORDS)
