Japan’s Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has been awarded contracts by Egyptian state generator EEHC for upgrades of two combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants that began operating in 2009. Both the Sidi Kerir and El-Atf CCGT plants on the Mediterranean have generating capacity of 750MW. MHPC says the upgrades will increase output, improve efficiency and reduce downtime at the plants. The upgraded plants are expected to begin operating in the first half of 2021.

MHPS also says it this month completed an upgrade of the 1.5GW Cairo North CCGT under a contract awarded in August 2017. The first of four units at the plant was brought online in 2004 and the last in 2008. All three plant upgrades are being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
