Abu Dhabi’s Adnoc Refining has awarded US firm McDermott a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for a refinery off-gas (ROG) project at the Ruwais refining complex 240km west of Abu Dhabi city. McDermott says the scope of work includes evaluating technology options and configurations for the recovery of hydrogen, ethane and sales grade LPG or C3 and C4 streams.

The FEED work will be used as the basis for preparing the engineering, procurement and construction management estimate. The ROG unit will likely provide some feedstock for the world’s largest mix-feed cracker, with capacity to produce 1.8mn t/y of ethylene, due to be built at Ruwais. The Borouge joint venture of Adnoc and Austria’s Borealis recently awarded contracts for FEED work, technology licensing and project management for the cracker and a 1.5mn t/y aromatics plant (MEES, 1 March).
