The UAE’s Emirates Water & Electricity Authority (Ewec) plans to begin tendering in the first half of 2019 for 5GW of solar power capacity, 2GW of conventional power capacity and 1.8mn m3/d of desalination capacity, according to official news agency WAM. Ewec, recently created to take over former Abu Dhabi utility Adwea’s power generation and water supply responsibilities in Abu Dhabi, is charged with working with the Federal Electricity & Water Authority (Fewa) to unify electricity and water provision across Abu Dhabi and the smaller emirates of Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah and Umm al-Quwain (MEES, 30 November 2018). The 7GW of planned additional powergen capacity will be equivalent to 40% of the combined 17.4GW of current capacity in the Ewec (16.7GW) and Fewa (700MW) operating areas. Fewa is increasingly reliant on imports from Abu Dhabi, taking an average 1.59GW from Abu Dhabi in 2017 as its aging and insufficient capacity falls ever further short of rising demand (MEES, 20 July 2018).
