Baghdad plans to ask Washington for a waiver on some US sanctions on Iran, Reuters says. Iraqi officials quoted in the 21 August report say a government delegation will travel to Washington to ask for exemptions in order to minimize the economic consequences of losing Iranian imported goods. Iran is Iraq’s third biggest supplier behind China and Turkey. Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi said earlier this month that Iraq would abide by US sanctions before saying days later that the country would only “abide by not using dollars in transactions” (MEES, 17 August).
