Saudi Arabia is to hand Tunisia $500mn in low interest loans and finance two projects worth $140mn Reuters reported on Wednesday, following a visit by Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman.
The crown prince was met with hundreds of angry protesters who blame him for the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and human rights violations.
Tunisia’s beleaguered economy can certainly do with the cash though. Around 650,000 civil service workers, plus thousands of supporters, took to the streets on 22 November to demand wage increases ( MEES, 23 November ). Another strike has been called for in January if demands are not met. Under the terms of its $2.9bn IMF program, Tunisia has agreed not to increase wages. (CONTINUED - 139 WORDS)
