Iran Reshuffles Oil Leadership

Iran oil minister Bijan Zanganeh this week made a number of appointments at key state firms. The key challenge facing all the new appointees is mitigating the impact of renewed US sanctions.

Masoud Karbasian replaced Ali Kardor as CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). Mr Kardor held the post since 2016 ( MEES, 17 June 2016 ) while Mr Karbasian’s tenure as economy minister was abruptly ended in August as he became the fall guy for Iran’s economic woes ( MEES, 31 August ).

The new NIOC chief has swiftly installed his own team. Ahmad Mohammadi will head up the National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC), Iran’s largest upstream producer at around 3mn b/d, and was appointed deputy minister. Jahangir Pourhang will lead Arvandan Oil & Gas Co with capacity of around 500,000 b/d close to the Iraqi border, and Abdullah Mousavi as head of the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC).
