Saudi Aramco aims to more than double its power generation capacity to 12GW in 2020. It intends to become self-sufficient in producing electricity to run its operations and also to begin direct sales of electricity. Currently Aramco is dependent on state-electricity firm SEC to top up its own generation.

This will require Aramco to add 7GW to its current power generating capacity, which data published by Aramco and government’s Electricity and Cogeneration Regulatory Authority (Ecra) show amounted to almost 5.1GW at the end of 2016 (see table).
