Abu Dhabi Looks To Break Dubai’s Solar Cost Record

Abu Dhabi electricity and water authority Adwea has received six bids for the planned 350MW Sweihan solar PV project, including one which promises to break the low cost solar record set recently by its Dubai counterpart Dewa.

Abu Dhabi’s state utility Adwea says the six bids it has received for Sweihan offer weighted levelized costs of electricity ranging from Dh0.089/kWh (US¢2.42/kWh) to Dh0.133/kWh (US¢3.63/kWh). “The innovative tariff structure that underpins the bids is weighted towards production in the [peak electricity demand] summer months,” says Adwea.

The lowest bid is the lowest to date worldwide for solar PV generation, beating the US¢2.99/kWh offered by a consortium led by Abu Dhabi’s Masdar to win the 800MW third phase of Dewa’s 5GW solar park at Seih al-Dalal, 50km south of Dubai city (MEES, 1 July). (CONTINUED - 579 WORDS)
