Eni Touts Zohr As East Med Hub

Italy’s Eni sees its Egyptian Zohr field as a hub for 'stranded' East Mediterranean deepwater gas discoveries, including those across the maritime border with Cyprus.

Eni says that tying-back to Zohr is the obvious development option for deepwater East Mediterranean gas finds that would otherwise be stranded.

But rapid movement is key: once the equipment and personnel involvement in Zohr development move on, changing the scope of the project will be more difficult and costly, Eni warns.

Key wells to be drilled offshore Cyprus next year – including by Eni itself – will determine the scope of any tie-in with Zohr. This could also provide the best hope for development of US firm Noble’s 5 tcf 2011 Aphrodite discovery – the only one offshore Cyprus to date – which runs the risk of being stranded.
