Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) has awarded a $500mn contract to Japan’s Mitsubishi to build a 160,000m³/d desalination plant for 3Q16 start-up. The plant will be built at Ras Abu Fontas, where Mitsubishi is already building a similar-sized plant for start-up in mid-2015.
The new plant will be Qatar’s first using reverse osmosis technology.
QEWC’s current 1.49mn cmd of capacity incorporates thermal desalination technology, which has better short-term water storage than membrane-based plants. State electricity and water distributor Kahramaa is expected to sign a 25-year water off-take agreement with generating and desalination firm QEWC shortly.
