Qatar-Japan Consortium Targets Turkey Coal-Fired Power

Qatar’s Nebras Power and Qatar Holding have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Japan’s Mitsubishi, Marubeni and Chubu Electric to study the potential for developing coal-fired power plants in Turkey’s southern Afsin-Elbistan region.

Nebras says the consortium aims “to evaluate projects including the development, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of lignite power plants. The consortium is seeking to offer the latest types of technology available at competitive prices.”

Nebras says the project involves the development of lignite mines to fuel power plants with a combined capacity of 4.5GW.

The Turkish government has itself estimated that the Afsin-Elbistan area has enough lignite to support up to 7GW of generating capacity. (CONTINUED - 299 WORDS)
