Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded a Dh1.47bn ($400mn) contract to Germany’s Siemens to add 700MW of electricity generating capacity at its M-Station power and desalination plant in Jebel Ali. The expansion will take M-Station capacity to 2.7GW of electricity and 630,000 cmd of water.
DEWA says UK-based Mott MacDonald is consultant for the project, which is scheduled for completion at the end of April 2018. M-Station is the UAE’s largest power and desalination plant and was inaugurated in early 2013 (MEES, 12 April 2013).
“The expansion project includes adding two gas turbine generators, two heat recovery steam turbines generators and one back pressure steam turbine. This will increase the plant’s thermal efficiency from 82.4% to 85.8%, which is considered among the highest thermal efficiency rates in the world,” says DEWA CEO Muhammad al-Tayir.
