The third meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) held in Tehran this week attracted relatively limited attention, despite Iran’s attempts to promote the role of the organization as a credible gas group that could ultimately manage markets. Despite some speculation to the contrary, there are no moves towards an official ‘gas Opec.’ Only a few members, in particular Russia, seem willing and able to exert their market power.
LOW PRICES HERE TO STAY?
In high level meetings this week, delegates from the 12 member countries reiterated the need for common understanding and collective action to challenges facing the gas industry, including supply and demand. A key theme was the promotion of gas in the future energy mix, ahead of the COP 21 climate summit in Paris next week, while plans to boost research and development efforts resulted in the appointment of Algeria as the host for the planned GECF Gas Research Institute.
