Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company (ADWEC) raised power generating capacity by 4% in 2013 to 13.9GW and expects to soon add a further 1.65GW, when commissioning is finished at the Shuweihat S3 power plant. Desalination capacity remains at 916mn gallons/day (4.16mn cmd). ADWEC has also lined up its next large power and water capacity addition, with the award of the Mirfa independent water and power producer (IWPP) project (see box).

ADWEC receives power and water from 12 plants operated by 11 separate firms. Almost all of Abu Dhabi’s power generating capacity is gas-fired, with a small amount provided by burning diesel and last year a tiny amount from direct crude burning. There is also one 100MW solar plant. Total power and water produced by ADWEC in 2013 amounted to 65.49TWh and 263bn gallons (1.2bn cu ms) respectively. (CONTINUED - 546 WORDS)
