Alongside the ever-present threat of attacks on Yemen’s key oil export pipelines, oil companies operating in the volatile nation have been forced to contend with a host of other factors, which have made working there particularly difficult in recent years.
One such element has been the growing strength of local workers’ unions in Yemen’s oil and gas sector. In the wake of the 2011 Arab Spring, oil workers have increasingly turned to strike action over the last three years to demand better rights for themselves.
Among the companies most recently affected by this is Norwegian-listed but MENA-focused independent DNO, which holds stakes in six licenses in the Masila province in central Yemen.
