SABIC Claims R&D ‘Firsts’

Saudi petchems giant SABIC claims breakthroughs in two research and development programs that are creating new applications for its specialty plastics. With US firm Cima NanoTech it has developed a “plastics industry first” transparent conductive polycarbonate film. With Swiss firm Kringlan Composites it has developed a “world’s first” thermoplastic composite automobile wheel.

SABIC says potential applications for the polycarbonate film include fast response touch screens for consumer electronics, anti-fogging car windscreens and electromagnetic interference shielding for electronic devices. SABIC marketing director Matt Gray says “transparent, conductive polycarbonate is a breakthrough material that customers in consumer electronics and other important industries have been seeking.”
