The International Desalination Association (IDA) is looking for a 20% energy reduction in all major seawater desalination processes by 2015. Besides improving energy efficiency it also aims to establish a strategic framework for utilizing new technologies to upgrade the capacity and efficiency of existing desalination plants.

IDA President Corrado Sommariva says a number of new technologies either recently developed or currently under development offer tremendous potential to achieve the energy reduction target. However the fact that they are not commercially proven is a major barrier to their adoption. (CONTINUED - 611 WORDS)
