Iraq and Jordan signed an agreement to press on with a pipeline project to export 1mn b/d crude from southern Iraq to the Jordanian port of ‘Aqaba. Construction is estimated to cost over $5bn.

Iraqi Oil Minister ‘Abd al-Karim al-Laibi, who signed the agreement with his Jordanian counterpart ‘Alai Batayna, in ‘Amman on 20 September, said the pipeline to ‘Aqaba will supply crude to the 100,000 b/d Zarqa refinery. Mr Laibi added that Baghdad was bringing in an international consulting firm to prepare a feasibility study for the project, to be followed by a road show to promote it to contractors and investors.
