International donors made the pledge at the ‘Friends of Yemen’ conference late last month, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. It follows on from aid commitments of more than $10bn made at similar conferences earlier this year (MEES, 7 September). Details as to the breakdown of the amounts offered by individual country were not disclosed.

Yemen’s President ‘Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi said he hoped the sum would help his country battle the Islamist insurgency in the increasingly lawless south. “Seventy percent of Yemen’s problem is economic,” Mr Hadi said, noting that “the new pledge will help Yemen avoid a civil war, which would be a local, regional and global threat.” (CONTINUED - 862 WORDS)
