GCC countries need more preparation before governments can agree on plans to integrate their economies, a GCC statement said on 2 September. In January the GCC established a committee to present proposals for integration to GCC foreign ministers in Jiddah on 2 September. Following the meeting, the GCC issued a statement saying: “Given the need for more time and discussion, the council decided to assign the general secretariat with finalizing the viewpoints of member countries and presenting them to the ministerial council in its next session to study and give a recommendation on it to the supreme council.” Among the outstanding issues is a proposal for a single GCC currency.
