Syria's membership in the Arab League was suspended in November of last year, and the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) – formerly known as the Organization of the Islamic Conference – has now followed suit. The closing statement of an OIC summit meeting in Mecca on 16 August declared that "the conference decides to suspend the Syrian Arab Republic membership in the OIC and all its subsidiary organs, specialized and affiliated institutions."
